What is Milia

Milia is a common skin condition that appears as tiny bumps on the skin, usually appearing around the eye area, on the eyelid, roof of your mouth, upper cheeks, around the nose and even in the genital area. They are basically small cysts that manifests as white to pale yellow in color. It is a very common skin condition that can affect nearly everyone, from infants to elderly, men or women. If you are suffering from milia, it might appear annoying having them around your face and you might want to look out for options available for you to treat and remove them.

What Causes Milia

Milia manifests as small white to pale yellow colored bumps, which can often be mistaken as white heads and even acne. However, they are very much different because milia does not have any danger of bacterial infection or case of facial scarring. The primary cause stems from the result of sebaceous glands that did not fully developed, disruption to the sweat glands, trauma following blisters or even from skin treatments such as radiotherapy or dermabrasion. It can also be caused by excessive use of cosmetics and dirt on your linen or pillow when you sleep.

Milia Treatment and Removal

Milia may appear tiny but they can not be easily removed through topical creams or ointments. The best way to completely treat them is to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist who can best advice on what procedure to do. Usually, it involves extraction which are done either manually with a needle or through laser treatment or cauterization.

Prevention is better than cure and that is true when it comes to milia. Just like any other skin blemishes, these can be best prevented if you protect your skin from sun damage. Always wear sunblock when you go out with at least an spf 15. Also, make sure you use a good cleanser and moisturizer for your skin to keep it healthy and glowing. Also, exfoliate on a regular basis to prevent the build up of dead skin cells on the skin.
